Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim, the 2015 U.S. pairs champions, announced today that they have withdrawn from their Grand Prix assignments as Scimeca Knierim recovers from a medical procedure. The team was schedule to compete at the Rostelecom Cup and Cup of China.
The couple was married in June, and in the days leading up to the wedding day, Scimeca Knierim said she started to feel sick.
“I was privately battling a series of internal ailments that left doctors baffled and my body in overwhelming pain,” Scimeca Knierim said in a U.S. Figure Skating press release.
Scimeca Knierim’s symptoms persisted throughout the summer, resulting in limited training time for the team.
Doctors eventually determined the source of the pain, and she recently underwent a medical procedure to alleviate the problem, which is undisclosed at this time.
“After months of uncertainty and concern, it is unbelievably liberating to announce that I have a clean bill of health,” Scimeca Knierim said in the statement.
The team has resumed light training and hopes to be back on the ice later this year.
Scimeca Knierim and Knierim are coming off a season in which they became the first U.S. team in eight years to qualify for the Grand Prix Final and took silver medals at the U.S. and Four Continents championships
